This passage reveals several attitudes and expectations of this early Christian church planter, Paul.
- Paul is a prisoner; we don’t know where for certain. Ephesus or Rome are possible. What does he see as the advantages of his imprisonment?
- What are his two biggest ‘helps? Does anything outstrip these two in your lifestyle? How can you correct that if need be?
- V21 is pretty strong, and we often focus on the second part. How would you answer anyone who suggested Christians have an unreal death wish?
- What is likely to make the Christians of Philippi proud of Paul? How does that transfer to the 21st century? V25-26
- V27-30 seem to be dominated by Paul’s struggle again. As you read through it, what can you find with which you can indentify?
- Does it mean more to be called a ‘citizen of heaven’ when you are being persecuted or threatened do you think?
- Do you think we talk/consider heaven
