Questions for Home Groups or Private Reflection
Luke 8, Luke 24.
We return to the main track of our ‘Sshh’ series this week. Over the next 3 months we will be having a close look at the key New Testament passages which give us a glimpse into the role of women in the 1st century church – or at least in some of the 1st century churches.
Our aim is to re-examine the ‘tradition’ we have, especially regarding Sunday preaching, to see if the cultural ‘shift’ taking place in the
majority of churches is something we should embrace or not.
There are quite a few passages appropriate for us to read this week, but let’s stick to just a small number – Luke 8:1-4, John 19:25-27, Luke 23:55- 24:12.
- Have you had to re-examine your assumptions about the role of women in the first century, having read these verses?
- Construct through discussion a typical day ion the life of Joanna, wife of Chuza, when part of Jesus travelling band. You can have fun doing it!
- Why are the ‘12’ all male do you suppose?
- How can we recapture something of the radical nature of 1st century Jesus-following, when our lives are as full of boundaries as they are – home, work, family, commitments etc?
- Can you tell others when you felt closest to that 1st century model? What were you doing to give you that feeling or memory?
